RoHS/Green & Package Information
Companies throughout the electronics industry, either through ISO or through their own initiatives, are implementing programs intended to limit and eliminate certain substances used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. The purpose of these programs is to reduce the influence of these substances on the ecosystem and to contribute to the overall preservation of the global environment.
Customers and manufacturers alike are focused on device assembly to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. Two directives from the European Union called "Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE)" and "Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS)" restrict the use of lead and other materials in electronic component products. These mandated directives took effect on July 1, 2006. China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) issued "Management Methods for Controlling Pollution Caused by Electronic Information Products" ("China RoHS"). This directive went into effect on March 1, 2007.
As a strategic supplier to customers who have taken the initiative to eliminate or reduce substances that will impact the ecosystem, SMSC has partnered with suppliers who have demonstrated that they conform to the European Union directives mentioned above as well as to China RoHS. All SMSC products are available in a Green material set that is compliant with the above directives. SMSC's primary plating alloy for Lead-Free devices is Matte Tin (e3).
