BJT/Transistor Model Temperature Measurement

The thermal diodes of many processors are actually transistors. Previous remote temperature monitoring techniques were based on modeling the thermal diode as a diode. Unfortunately, this did not compensate for real transistor behavior. As processors now push forward to smaller geometries, it becomes more important to read their on-board thermal diodes as transistors for accuracy.

The following SMSC Thermal Management devices implement BJT/Transistor Model Temperature Measurement to provide this highly accurate technology and to counter the variations specific to substrate transistors:

Beta Variation
Series Resistance
Non-Ideality Factor

These devices continue to measure traditional remote diode configurations as well.
