Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What advantage does the UTMI-compliant digital interface offer the user? Does the USB3250 have a UTMI interface?

SIE vendors have designed their solutions to be UTMI compliant. The user has maximum flexibility in selecting a supplier for the SIE, and whether to implement the PHY using an external device or an integrated macrocell. The USB3250 is UTMI compliant.

Q. The USB3250 operates in both 8-bit uni-directional and 16-bit bi-directional modes. Is there an advantage to either mode?

SMSC supports both modes of operation to suit all customer needs. The USB3250 has superior performance in both modes. The customer may select the mode that best supports their application.

USB3250 Supporting Circuitry

Q. Can an external clock be supplied to the oscillator input rather than using a crystal?

Yes.

Q. What type of support does SMSC offer to someone prototyping or building a reference design with the USB3250?

SMSC offers the following solutions to help you get your first system running.

  1. The EVB-USB3250 is a card that interfaces the user's test system through a 100-pin connector.
  2. SMSC's applications team can assist you in laying out a prototype PCB with the USB3250. USBCheck™ is a value added design review service SMSC provides to customers who have selected SMSC USB devices for their product designs. From initial schematic design, PCB design, and testing cycles, SMSC offers guidance and answers to any questions you may have during every step of the design cycle of your new product.
USB3250 General Questions

Q. Can the USB3250 be used for Host applications or downstream ports?

The USB3250 is optimized for device applications, not Hub or Host. The USB3300, USB3450 and USB3500 each support Host applications.

Q. Does the USB3250 support the "LS only" and "FS only" modes that are listed as optional in the UTMI spec?

The USB3250 could be used for full speed only applications, but does not include a low speed mode. The USB3300, USB3450 and USB3500 each support LS operation.

Q. What simulation environments does SMSC support?

SMSC can provide an encrypted model for use with Verilog XL, ModelSim, or NC from Synopsys operating on Sun Solaris if needed for large customer engagements.

Q. Does SMSC offer a USB controller?

Yes, SMSC currently offers several Hi-Speed USB 2.0 device controllers. For more information, go to the Connectivity Solutions page.
